Job Summary:

: The Assistant Network Director of Perfusion is responsible for the management and supervision of cardiac perfusion services in the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at both the WMC Valhalla and Good Samaritan Hospital Campuses. The incumbent is responsible for assisting in planning and providing for all procedures requiring perfusion services, including, as necessary, transfer support for mechanical circulatory support, such as extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) patients and solid organ transplant procurement related endeavors. The Assistant Network Director will ensure adequate staffing and technical support, budgeting, regular assessment and reporting of quality outcome metrics. The incumbent will also render perfusion services as required.

Responsibilities:

  • Assists in managing and directing a team of cardiovascular perfusionists in the delivery of care
  • Analyzes volume and daily/monthly caseloads and assigns staff appropriately.
  • Acts as liaison with all the perioperative services.
  • Assists in establishes long and short term goals for the Perfusion program;
  • Ensures compliance with applicable rules and regulations related to perfusion techniques and services;
  • Coordinates and supports a structure for ongoing education and training of all members of the perfusion team.
  • Develops and implements quality guidelines, monitors adherence and corrects deficiencies.
  • With the advice of the attending surgeon, schedules and prepares patients for surgical procedures and manages cases of patients requiring perfusion services.
  • Maintains physiological integrity of patient while on bypass, i.e., hemodynamics, fluid, and electrolyte balance when on assignment and ensures the same from his/her team.
  • Monitors and records all parameters during bypass to include flow rates, perfusion pressure, blood gasses, electrolytes, urinary output and body temperature when on assignment and ensures the same from his/her team.
  • Maintains all equipment used for extracorporeal circulation and related support devices.
  • Ensures proper maintenance and if necessary repair of all perfusion related equipment.
  • Ensures maintaining of an adequate inventory of perfusion related supplies and equipment.
  • Performs ECMO and cardiopulmonary bypass competencies for staff on an annual basis.
  • Educates and instructs other diciplines on ECMO as needed throughout the hospital.
  • Contributes to supervision of ECMO staff
  • With the ICU ECMO staff, organizes monthly ECMO meetings/education seminars and assists in contributing clinical data to the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO).
  • Develops hospital policies and procedures as they relate to perfusion services.
  • Assists staff with inservices on new technologies and techniques.
  • Assists in developing and onboarding the perfusion electronic medical record.
Qualifications/Requirements:

Experience:

Three years of experience where the primary function of the position was performing cardiovascular perfusion.

Education:

Graduate of an accredited U.S. Perfusion program. Master’s level degree preferred.

Licenses / Certifications:

: Possession of a license and current registration issued by the New York State Education Department as a Perfusionist. American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion certified.

Other:

Thorough knowledge of the operation, monitoring and maintenance of extracorporeal pumps and related perfusion equipment; thorough knowledge of medical technology; thorough knowledge of the techniques and equipment used in open heart surgical procedures; ability to keep accurate records of vital statistics and replaceable items; ability to supervise a highly technical medical unit and coordinate its activities with other medical center activities; ability to work under stressful and emergency conditions; ability to compile budgets and reports; ability to effectively use computer applications such as spreadsheets, word processing, calendar, e-mail and database software in performing work assignments; reliability; accuracy; thoroughness; sound judgment; physical condition commensurate with the requirements of the position. Special Requirements: Licensure and current registration as a Perfusionist issued by the New York State Department of Education must be maintained throughout employment in this title.
