Job Details:

The Assistant Nurse Manager is responsible and accountable for the day-to-day management of operations and delivery of safe and effective patient care within the Maternal Child Services department. This includes coordination of activities with other disciplines/departments and supervision of nursing personnel assigned to these areas, in accordance with regulatory/institutional standards of care/practice, as well as philosophy of the hospital and the division, in the most cost effective manner.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Plans, organizes and coordinates the delivery of patient care and monitors compliance to standards.
  • Provides oversight and coordinates continuous and safe patient flow and throughput throughout the maternity service units; L&D, OB ED, MBU, Newborn Nursery, NICU.
  • Works cooperatively with Maternity Service Director, Clinical Managers, Physicians, nursing and ancillary staff to assure that appropriate workflow, scheduling, and staffing maximizes the efficiency and delivery of safe patient care throughout the continuum.
  • Assists Nurse Manager with scheduling and staffing for optimal availability of resources. Establishes, and adjusts as needed, the assignment of nursing staff to patients based on unit specific standards, staff competency, and acuity of patients.
  • Provides leadership for coordination of unit activity.
  • Demonstrates a sound knowledge base and decision-making in the provision care for the perinatal/maternity service patient population.
  • Acts as a professional role model to all levels of staff by incorporating expertise, critical thinking and related experience in all aspects of nursing process in the care of patients and families.
  • Acts as an independent, self-directed professional with highly developed interpersonal skills, critical thinking and problem resolution.
  • Supports the mission, philosophy, standards, goals and objectives of the institution, department, unit, and service line.
  • Delegates tasks as appropriate based upon patient need and staff qualifications.
  • Assists in facilitating a collaborative interdisciplinary approach to achieve optimal patient care outcomes.
  • Provides direct patient care as needed to support the clinical operations of the unit.
  • Responds to emergency situations per established protocol.
  • Proactive in identifying and resolving issues that affect patient care and operational efficacy, identifies sources of conflict and resolves accordingly. Appropriately manages up.
  • Demonstrates a spirit of collaboration and effective cooperation with other departments regarding clinical activity of other units in the service and hospital.
  • Participates in interview/selection of new staff members and human resources process (hiring, training, evaluation developing, coaching, disciplining)
  • Assists Nurse Manager with annual employee performance evaluations; provides input concerning adherence to performance standards.
  • Communicates and supports hospital programs and enforces department and hospital policies and procedures
  • Participates in the development, review and revision of unit policies and procedures
  • Monitors quality metrics, conducts/coordinates unit-based QI activities and participates in quality improvement projects/activities.
  • Promotes patient and other consumer satisfaction by facilitating excellent customer service by all members of the health care team.
  • Monitors patient satisfaction in real time and provides service recovery as needed.
  • Demonstrates a judicious use of financial and material resources.
  • Assists with compliance with standards and regulations of agencies pertinent to the unit or clinical service.
  • Maintains competency in clinical specialty and participates in relevant professional organizations and networking forums.
  • Performs other duties as assigned. 

QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS:

Experience:

Minimum of 3 years of nursing experience required with a minimum of 1 year L&D experience; additionally, a minimum of 1 year experience in postpartum and NICU preferred

  • Prior Assistant Manager or Supervisor experience highly preferred
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Education: Graduation from an approved School of Nursing, BSN.

Master’s degree in Nursing or other health related discipline preferred

Licenses / Certifications: Current New York State RN License

Current BLS, ACLS, NRP certifications

EFM Certification preferred

STABLE preferred
