Pediatric Physician Assistant / Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, Emergency Department The primary function of a Pediatric Emergency Physician Assistant (PA) or Nurse Practitioner (NP) is to work collaboratively with members of the Emergency Department staff including but not limited to physicians and nurses, as well as to interface with community pediatricians in an effort to provide medical care to children, teens, and young adults (up to age 21) who are acutely ill or injured presenting to the emergency department. A pediatric emergency PA/NP is trained to care for a wide range of problems, some of which require immediate medical attention. These problems are often serious and may be life-threatening. Qualifications Nurse practitioner candidates must hold a Master’s degree in nursing (MSN) or Doctorate of nursing (DNP) with a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) certification Physician Assistant candidates must hold a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree from an AMA accredited physician assistant program as well as certification from the National Commission for Certified Physician’s Assistants (NCCPA) PA and NP candidates must possess a minimum of two (2) years of pediatrics experience Prior practice in an emergency department or urgent care setting is highly desirable Valid New York State license to practice medicine Unrestricted DEA number Essential Job Functions Work collaboratively with on-site emergency department supervising physicians to evaluate, diagnose, and treat a broad array of acute and non-acute medical and psychiatric conditions in patients up to age 21 years Recognize emergency conditions in patients and communicate timely information to supervising physicians Order and interpret clinically appropriate tests Perform procedures within the scope of practice and expertise as defined by the delineation of privileges, including but not limited to: wound care and repair, abscess incision and drainage, injections, fracture/dislocation management, respiratory support, etc. Coordinate outpatient referral and follow-up care plans for patients being discharged from the emergency department Communicates diagnosis-specific education to patients and families/guardians. Coordinate inter-facility transfers for patients in need of inpatient services Supervise medical, PA and/or NP students during clinical practice in the emergency department setting Use an electronic medical record (EMR) to document patient encounters, place orders for patient care, and view results Practice pediatric emergency medicine in an ethical manner consistent with contemporary, evidence-based practice guidelines Maintain a current pediatric emergency medicine knowledge and skills though independent study, continuing medical education, and maintenance of board certification Maintain current certifications in Basic and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (BLS/ACLS), Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), any other certifications required by the attending physician or Medical Staff Office Exhibit professionalism in the healthcare facility at all times Participate in medical staff, department, and hospital affairs as applicable Abide by departmental and hospital initiatives for practice quality and performance improvement Understand basic principles of documentation, coding, billing, and practice expense costs We are a suburban community hospital with a close affiliation to Westchester Medical Center, a quaternary care health network. Pediatric emergency physicians will be responsible for supervising advanced practice providers as well as students in medical, PA, or NP school. Academic appointments are available through Westchester Medical Center. Company Information: We have a newly renovated and modern 30-bed ED which was just opened in 2014.
