The Vascular Service Line Leader will be responsible for the daily operations of the assigned operating room service line. 


  • Assumes the responsibility for the daily operations of the assigned service line. 
  • Serves as a liaison with the assigned service line surgeons. 
  • Demonstrates clinical and technical expertise in service line surgical specialty and functions as resource person for the unit. 
  • Reviews weekly schedule and types of procedures, in collaboration with scheduler, for the coordination of patient care in appropriate operating room, staffing assignments, supplies, and equipment. 
  • Updates OR schedule when necessary, making appropriate notations on the master schedule. 
  • Updates surgeon preference cards with all information needed to provide safe, efficient and quality care to the perioperative patient. 
  • Prepares area for daily activities as per unit policy. 
  • Provides direct nursing care to patients by assessing their physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual status. 
  • Oversees and coordinates the provision of skilled professional care to the perioperative patient with all members of the health care team. 
  • Collaborates with appropriate members of the health care team to coordinate care for patients. 
  • Ascertains proper functioning of all required equipment and instrumentation in designated room/service, and notifies appropriate personnel if repair, loaner and/or replacement is needed. 
  • Operates unit based equipment as per unit policy. 
  • Maintains and ascertains that all preventative checks records are logged according to departmental guidelines. 
  • Monitors par levels of supplies, implants and other items that are inherent to the service, ordering as necessary. 
  • Delegates responsibility and authority to get work done successfully. 
  • Collaborates with other departments, ancillary and support services in a multi-disciplinary approach to nursing care. 
  • Provides timely communication with the main OR desk regarding cancellations, changes in order of cases, and future availability of room and staff to maximize flow of the schedule. 
  • Maintains an open channel of communication with the Director or designee. 
  • Refers to questions/issues/concerns regarding the scope of nursing practice to the Director or designee. 
  • Participates in the performance improvement process including data collection, analysis, plan for change, and implementation of changes. 
  • Collects and maintains the information needed to submit for quality and any outside data submission for the service line. 
  • Participates in the orientation, supervision and completion of competency checklists for new staff members/per diems. 
  • Communicates regularly with the educator(s) on the progress of orientation. 
  • Coordinates in continuing education programs and in-service training on procedures, supplies, and equipment in conjunction with the nursing educator. 
  • Completes continuing education programs on time. 
  • Acts as preceptor to new graduate nurses to ensure appropriate orientation to assigned units. 
  • Oversees compliance with universal precautions, principles of aseptic techniques and other infection prevention and control policies. 
  • Provides education to the patient and family about medication, medical treatments; disease specific information, follow up care. 
  • Ensures adherence with hospital policies and procedures. 
  • Attends staff huddles and meetings. 
  • Advocates the patient bill of rights and advocates on behalf of patients and families to ensure continuity and understanding of care given. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned. 


Three years recent experience in perioperative vascular service. Valid NYS RN license. Current BLS certification required. CNOR preferred. 


BSN preferred. Completion of BSN is expected within 5 years of hire.
