Our Rich History
Army hospital on Grasslands Reservations treats troops suffering from Spanish influenza. Three years later, the Army turns the hospital over to the County and becomes a center for treating medical illnesses such as polio, scarlet fever and diphtheria. The hospital later expands to include emergency care, surgery, cancer and cardiac services.
The hospital affiliates with New York Medical College, and a year later, a new regional academic medical center is built. The medical center enhances programs with a burn unit; NICU; pediatric cardiac surgery; bone marrow, kidney and liver transplant programs; regional trauma center; behavioral health center and STAT flight (region’s only 24-hour medevac helicopter program).
